I took this course the summer after my Sophomore year at UW, and each week drove out to Monroe Correctional Complex to discuss readings with inmates of the Twin Rivers Unit. I fell in love with the topic and experience, and became pretty passionate about pursuing a career in Prison counseling in the future. It inspired me to set a goal of owning a Coffee Shop/Counseling center for recently incarcerated people to help them transition back into society.
As a class, we compiled an article overviewing what we did throughout the summer and how it effected not only us but the TRU students as well. I'd really recommend checking out the full article, and I've posted one of my own comments included in the article down below.
"Not only was the prison its own community, but it's a part of our outside community as well. Visits made me realize how real the people there are and how important it is to recognize that. They're people who will once again be integrated into society and our complete denial of their humanity is counterproductive."
